I hope this is the correct area of the forum to post this. My home was a roadhouse/tavern for about 1/2 of the last century. A gentleman bought it, and turned it into a home about 1940. I have been attempting to detect the property as I have time. I travel quite a bit and try to do some research while on the road. So far I really have only found some clad coins around the house.
My land has quite a few out buildings. Barns, Coops, an Old Garage and a Sap House. The thing I find puzzling is that my house is about 1/2 mile from the out buildings. This doesn't make sense to me. It seems like its way to far. I am guessing at one time there was a house somewhere closer to the out buildings. The first photo shows how far away it is. My home is at the top right...on a hill over looking the island. It's the brown building. The ones that show white are the outbuildings. I am good at identifying old cellar holes, trees lined up, bottle dumps etc. I have found 2 bottle dumps. One behind my house (mostly old liquor bottles), and one at the bottom of a hill fairly close to the outbuildings. I just can't seem to find any signs of where the house would have been if there was one there.
The next thing that bothers me. I found a state map online. It's got 2 symbols on it (the cross with the brackets). The legend for the map says "State Maintained Historical Site". One of the sites is the old cemetery that is adjacent to my land (the left one). The other I have no idea. Its clearly on my land, but I have never seen anything out there.
I plan on hitting the nearest library to me when I get home (unfortunately 15 miles away). I also plan on hitting the county building to look up records. I have the platt #'s off the deed to the land and hope I can get somewhere with that. Any ideas what materials I should look for? I realize old maps etc...but anything specific to find out what the second "Historical Place might have been? Any help that would point me in the correct direction would be appreciated.....
