My wife inherited a pair of (yellow) diamond earrings and one (yellow-colored) diamond ring. She took the rings in to be cleaned and the sales person wanted to offer her $300 for the earrings and $500 for the ring on the spot. My wife declined, not knowing the value of these herself, nor did she 'trust' the sales person to give her the correct value. The Earrings are 1.6 ct diamond studs and the ring is a 1.15 round single cut diamond.

I know we will need an appraisal first, but what to do after that?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

the amount you were offered for these pieces was low ball scrap value.
don't go back to that shop...
i did a quick google on 1.2 diamonds, starting price was around $1,200 for used pieces. prices dependent on color, cut ect.

Very true on the color and cut. However, it might just be a fair price. But, as pippinwhitepaws says, I would certaintly go to another shop.

I used to piddle with diamonds and we called yellow diamonds "PITS" or Pee In The Snow. They come and go on desirability, and have been on the upswing for a while. They refer to them now as "champagne". That's sounds a little low, I'd have them appraised at a jeweler to be safe.

As stated it all depends on Quailty and clarity. But yellow diamonds are rare. I once found a 1 half caret yellow stoned ring . It was an antique for sure. I took it to a gem friend, and he said it was either a yellow diamond or a parodet. If it was a parodet $300.00 if it was a yellow diamond he said huge bucks. It turned out to be a parodet ,and I sold it to a good girl friend for $200.00 for her daughter. Your ring and and stud earings are worth WAY WAY more than you were offered. Mike.
