Another treasure story from Oregon tells of a Spanish ship at anchor off the Nehalem shore. A party of local indians observed a small boat with a large black box dispatched for the shore. The party from this boat, which included a black man, took the box and buried it a little way up the beach near the Southwest side of the slopes of Neah-Kah-Nie. They then killed the black man and placed him on the box before covering it up. They then left as they had arrived. Native superstition would not allow the box to be dug up. There are many stories of attempts to locate this chest and it is said the slope is full of holes from this effort. There is a rock at the base of the mountain with what resembles a cross cut into it and possibly the words "IHS", a catholic symbol and an arrow pointing in a direction. One story tell of a Thomas McKay of the Hudsons Bay Co who seemed in later years to have an abundance of wealth. Did he find the box or was he just a good trader.

Mention of the Neahkahnie Mountain treasures is also given in Rube el Hult's Lost Mines and Treasures of the Pacific Northwest. On page 2 of that book, she details a story by the Clatsop Indians stating visitors to the coast "...killed a man - a black man - and buried him with the chest."

In el Hult's later book, Treasure Hunting Northwest, p. 96, she gives two different versions (or perhaps two different stories?):

First, quoting Astoria pioneer John Hobson "...and some people brought a chest up on Necanny Mountain and carried sacks of money and put them in a chest and killed a man, and put him also in the chest. Afterwards they marked a stone, or very large rock, rolled it on the chest, and went back to the ship ..."

Secondly, on page 97 of Treasure Hunting Northwest is "At Three Rocks Beach about fifty miles south of Neahkahnie the skeleton of a man eight feet tall identified as that of a Negro was unearthed in 1931. A local Indian legend tells of a ship blown into the mouth of the Salmon River and wrecked, the crew carrying a huge box or chest ashore and burying it. The crew members then departed from the site and walked overland, all except two left behind to guard the treasure. One of the two was a black man."

I live in Nehalem. If you visit the Nehalem Valley Historical Society's online archive you can finder about several attempts to locate the treasure. No one has found it, unless your referring the horrible indie film called Tillamook Treasure
