Today, because of limited time, I hunted a neighbors' curb strip. Normally I'm very careful about the condition of my digs. This property has the original slate sidewalks. They will be replaced this summer and the owner has promised me a long look after the slate is removed. He's not the least little bit concerned about how often I search or the condition after I'm done. Recently, he had me expose the gas and water line access ports. So, I'm happily moving along the strip, gathering clad (nope, not a silver day) and get to the end of the strip where there is a very large tree......and I get a nice strong signal. My pointer shows that the location is under a tree root. Now, I've never cut a tree root. Most hunts are in public areas and that's not someplace I want to cut a root to create controversy...........
But, I've read numerous stories here about the amazing finds under tree roots and those stories flash into my mind......and the home owner is ok with me creating a little havoc in the strip......and I have the tool to use..........

Found this on one of my first hunts......not buried, just in very tall grass. Carry it with me; never used it. This is the perfect opportunity!!!
Flashing out the saw blade, I cut one side of the root. All the while, I'm thinking about the possibilities......an oldie......maybe my first IHP......or my first Merc.......or even.....dare I think such things!!!! The first side is cut, now for the back side cut. I bury the saw into a part of the root that is still buried in loose dirt and cut. Setting aside the wood, I get my pointer to get a fix and.........THERE'S NO SIGNAL?!!?!? Befuddled, I rescan the hole and the immediate area........nothing. I get the Compadre and rescan........nothing. I sat down and stared at the hole totally puzzled. Slowly I replaced all the dirt and reached for the piece of root to place in my trash bucket............

You had me from Hello..and then, lead me right down the rabbit hole!

Another disappearing target mystery---SOLVED!!!

Ya that...or it is magnetic and attached its self to your pin pointer, which has nulled it out and stopped beeping.

I will betcha anything that pop top came off a can of root beer:laughing7:

There's some sort of irony here, but I can't quite put my finger on it.
