New and wanting to start!!

You can get a lot for 500. Garrett Ace250 = 215.00. Lesche digging knife ='s 40.00 A Sniper coil ='s 60.00 Leather tool pouch ='s 20.00
SunRay inline probe ='s 165.00 all that for $500.00

really depends on what type of hunting you are doing... i started with the ace250 myself, but i hunt saltwater beaches and ace cant hit the wet sand or waters edge... so i ordered a minelab x-terra 50... its $500, and i love it... i can fully hunt the beach and even bring it in ankle deep water no problem (till i waterproof the display and able to take it into the water) doesnt pick up little foil pieces like the ace did... i like it alot better

I can recommend the Minelab Musketeer Advantage, but that will use up your $500 in a pop. I bought mine used and the detector, headphones and a Merlin SXL probe and a Lecshe tool (well worth the $35) came to less that $500. It really needs a good set of headphones to get the most out of it. No display, but it goes deep, is reliable and without the display you never have to worry about being lied to that a gold ring is a pulltab or a three-cent piece is foil. ;D

I suggest that you visit the manufactures websites to learn first what you might like to use. The ACE 250 is well liked by some and you can upgrade later if you feel the need.

Being new, I wouldn't buy used as you wouldn't be able to tell if the detector is working properly. Of course if you bought it from Tony, you'd have no problem. http://www.tcmetaldetectors.com/ Tony post here often too. One item you gotta have is headphones. Without them, every kid within hearing will be next to you.

I agree with the ACE250. Excellent low priced detector. Leaves you with some cash to buy accessories. Good headphones very important. .... ;D

There are a few in that range. Give me a call and we can discuss your options.

If theres gold in the area's your planning on MD'ing, then you might look at a pulse induction detector as they don't have problems with the black sand mineralization common to area's with gold. And if your into electronics at all, there are some pulse induction plans and even a kit somewhere around. I'm looking at that possibility myself.

Keep in mind that when you buy anything thats not pulse induction, you'll have to descriminate out alot, which will mean less depth, which will require a larger coil to compensate, which will mean your ability to pinpoint will be effected, etc...... Or something like that. ::)

i suggest the vibraprobe 560 instead of sunray. It is way more acurate and easy (and waterproof)

A person has to be careful when it comes to PI detectors. Most are designed to be used in or around saltwater. Taking them inland can lead to a lot of problems 'cause, contrary to the claims made by the manufacturers, they WILL be affected by the ground. If you look at land hunting units you'll generally see either a manual GB or they'll have ground tracking. In regards to PI disc., at present it's rather rudimentary. The one advantage of the present PI disc. is (on the Infinium and Goldscan 5) that they're effective at full depth, which is NOT the case with VLF's. Another difference between PI and VLF disc. is that the PI version isn't affected by mineralization. ..Willy.
