Anyone know what they were for?

They look like the number tags that would be on old Hotel room keys. Just a guess

I'm thinking stock tags, like sheep or goats ? Some horse breeders use to put tags their broodmares halters.

Nice hunt,, I have seen tags like those attached to wrist bands and issued to swimmers at pools and beaches. The number(s) attached to your clothes basket or locker matches the number on your tag.

The blue one looks like a bird tag. I agree with against the wind - the numbered tags looks like those issued for coat racks, clothes lockers, etc. Some interesting finds.

Congrats, you are getting quite a collection of finds. How soon before you hit the beach?

Things are getting more interesting already! Nice job, those tags are cool

Those tags could be for a lot of things. Livestock, swimmers lockers, tool crib, coat check, ETC.

I would rule out hotel as most I have seen have the name of the hotel on them. Livestock seems probable due to the size. I don't think there is any way to pin down what they were for originally.

They could have been used for almost anything. Where you dug them could help give you a clue. I once found 92 tags just like yours in a park. ( yes it took me forever until my detector finally stopped beeping ). They were buried at the base of a huge tree. I figured they might be tree tags that the forestry department or County may have used to put on certain trees for some reason. Sometimes they mark trees when they tap them for syrup. I really dont know for sure, as they are not marked with any I.D. except for the number. Good thing is is that they are all made of brass so if I ever scrapped them they would have some value.
