Hi Folks,

New member from Georgia here. Before that discourages you, I grew up out west and my father and I would visit Colorado every summer. Panning for gold on the Arkansas River, visiting old abandon mines from the 1800s, fishing for trout in mountain streams, hunting deer/elk in the fall.

I do have some recent mining experience. Well, some panning in our local creeks. .Well, believe it or not, Here in North Georgia, we had one of the first US Gold Rushes in 1829. We live 50 miles from that location. Lots of gold was found around my town and panned out of the Chattahoochee River by the Indians (Native Americans) and first US settlers in this area (1830s-1920s). We currently trout fish in Chattahoochee River, but not pan for gold.

My son is SIX this year, i'm 42. I would love to take him to Colorado during the summer, just like I did as a boy/teenager.

I have a lot to learn and will be lurking around here looking for info.

Thanks,
Brian

The Dahlonega Mint was built during the Georgia Gold Rush and operated from 1838 to 1861. They minted gold coins. The denominations were $1, $2.50, $3, & $5. The mint mark used was "D".
That mint mark is used today by the mint in Denver, Colorado.
Welcome to Tnet.

Yes indeed. Lots of gold was found a few miles south of Dahlonega, where we live. In fact, my sons mother lives a few houses away from one of the original family homes that mined gold in the 1860s.

Lots of history.

LOL. Figured that a lot of folks don't like the south ever had/has gold.
It was more of a joke. :)

The gold that adorns the top of the capital building in downtown Atlanta came from Dahlonega, Georgia. There was gold in them thar hills. Folks still pan for gold in the area.
