Im wondering what I should get my price range is $300 to $400 im wanting to do various things with my detector but im not sure what I need are how im going to be using it?

Detectors are tools and soon you will find that to do it all well that you may need more than one. Finding the first one is easy, but mistakes are made and we soon upgrade.

Instead of telling you which one I think is best, I suggest you check out the Whites, Garrett, Minelab and Tesoro websites to learn what is available for what you want to use it for. Stay away from the big box stores discount detectors as many find them wanting.

Hiram, I like Tesoro detectors a lot.
They do what they are supposed to do.
Lightweight, trim and compact, easy to use, and lifetime warranty.

Since you are new to this, AND undecided, I would advise you purchase a Tesoro Compadre.
They are getting excellent reviews because people are beginning to notice how well they work.
About $150 brand spanking new, and you'll have a friend for life that only eats batteries once and a while!

I'd almost guarantee if you ever upgrade to a fancier machine, you would keep it for a loaner, or spare.
