That's just the lining of the box.

I talked to my sister who's a jeweler and she says it's style is not of a period which makes me think it's relatively recent.

How long does everyone think that box had been underground? It was severely rusted on the outside and it was buried in soil 5-6" deep...or maybe there's just too many variables...

Maybe 80's they used to have those squarish metal boxes than for jewelry.
