Back in December I was detecting a local wooded area. A passerby stopped to asked if I had dug anything good. We started chatting and he told me about a nearby place he walks his dogs. He told me there are hundreds of old bottles at the spot, and he thought it may be a good spot to detect. I was already aware of the potential spot; I have some old photos of the area. The 1951 photo below shows a church and numerous houses. The church still remains, but the houses are gone. Here is the photo:

I had a busy weekend but, with temps in the 70's I just couldn't let the weekend get away without just a little detecting. So at 4:30 this afternoon I headed out the door, promising to be home by 6. Luckily the site is less than 2 miles from my home. I parked the car on the side of the road near the church and found a lot of trash, but no coins. Finally I found the heart shaped thingy. My best guess is that it is an old picture frame. I moved further down toward the more distant house in the photo, and found the "old" bottles. The place was filled with Snapple bottles and old Miller bottles. Nothing too exciting, but I knew what used to be at the site so I had hope. There was a lot of trash, but I got a nice Dime/Quarter signal at 4.5 inches. Out popped my first Seated coin, an 1877 S Quarter!!! This beats my oldest silver by more than 20 years. The San Francisco mint mark is also unusual for a coin that old in my region. By now it was 5:45 and I needed to head home. On the way I dug the old pocket watch and the pencil sharpner handle. All in all it was a quick, but successful outing!

Sometimes talking to a person can give you other leads. I had such an incident Sat. that lead to 3 new spots to hunt. Nice seated you found :icon_sunny:

sweet coin! i hope to dig a seated some day! :D   congrats!

Awesome finds - congrats!!!

That pencil sharpener handle looks more like the windshield crank to mid- thirties car. My '35 Plymouth has a similar crank handle mounted in the center of the dash that will crank out the windhield. If the handle is made out of pot metal I would bet on it. To me that makes it even a better find than a pencil sharpener handle.
Nice quarter also, love any of the seated series. :)

I can clearly envision what I would feel like in your situation after getting that signal at that depth , beginning

to dig the plug as my prayers flew skyward - then the instant when I realized I'm seeing silver - Seated Liberty

WOW ! Argentium.

RJ,
It is definitely pot metal. My first thought when I dug this was "old car window crank". My 12 year old son had no idea that windows had to be manually rolled down. He is the one that suggested the pencil sharpener. I am in agreement with you that is is an old Crank. I found a 1934 Plymouth windshield crank in a Google search. I think you nailed it on this one!
