New spot: Don't ignore relatives!
I am brand new to the hobby (By the way, anyone up for a hunt in the Springfield, MA area let me know!). I have spent the past two days in the local park. Lots of beeps and bings from my ACE 250, but am bringing up nothing but trash.
Anyways, I ask my wife about her mother's land, and she says the house was built in the 1700s, and there used to be a cider mill on the property! I am now very excited to get up there after I learn to use this machine. Don't ignore family! Chances are they have been in the area a long time, and may have great ideas about old properties you can search!
Problem is, my search time will be limited, and the area VERY large. Any hints for hunting a large property like this? Do I start near the house? This presents problems as I don't want her mad about any dead grass or lawn scars. Or do I search the field, pond, or woods?
At any rate it won't happen until we get some good weather (and the ground thoroughly thaws), and I get at least 10-20 hours with the detector under my belt. I am still having trouble actually finding my targets. Yeah, I know how to pinpoint, but the feature doesn't seem to be working well for me. When I pinpoint, sometimes I can drag the coil back a full foot before I lose max signal. Other times I can actually take the coil off the ground and point the whole unit at the sky and I still get full signal! Guess I just need more practice with the Ace. I am hoping it isn't defective, that would suck!
