Hello. What's a good handheld detector for beginners? I'd like to spend $50? I bought a discovery 1000 for $40 in a pawn shop. I've been learning how it works. I think I'm to the point a handheld detector would be a great help. But due to my inexperience, I'm hoping someone out there can recommend me something. I'm not looking for anything particular. I have an old black locust on my property high on a hill like an old lookout. I've found mostly junk and old metal, a few brass .22 shells that got my metal detector all excited. Me, not so much. I love the site. Thanks again!

By handheld, do you mean a pinpointer? Cheapest around is the Cen-Tech from Harbor Freight. About $20. They work, but not well.

I'm not sure. I'm still new and don't know hardly anything. I just need something that when I'm digging, I have to keep getting my big metal detector for say, a handful of dirt.

If you don't want spend much, just start with the cheap cen-tech from harbor freight. They work OK when checking dirt handful at a time. If you get to wanting a better one (I did), I recommend the Whites TRX. Night and day difference. My son now uses the cen-tech, but he wants a TRX too. ^_^

Thank you for the help. $20 sounds like a great price for a noob. Even if it does run me in circles, I'll be better off than I am now. Happy hunting :)
