new to relic hunting

Hi everyone, I am new to relic hunting...I bought a Discovery 1100 detector by Bounty Hunter. I hate to ask but is this a good detector? Are there any tips someone can give me for starting to hunt? Any tips on how to locate a site? I don't want to step on anyone's toes by asking for sites or anything or the sort, just help in how to finding somewhere to hunt.
