Decide a budget.
An AT-Pro would not be the worst place to start with a detector and you might find some used ones now that it's winter.

Pick some loose goals as to what you are after. Realistic ones.
Research can be very important. As well as permissions on private land.
Both are quite doable. Study both.

Write down potential sites and why.
Hone a skill before testing it on a big permission or hunt... Saves time and doubts.

A detector takes time to really learn.
There is often a better detector to be acquired. But that does not make the person using it more skilled in it's use unless they really study with it's performance. And thier own performance.
