Newbie in FL - Thanks! & First Strike!

Thanks for the advice, and for steering me to the ACE 250 fellas. I picked one up today at a local shop in Pompano Beach.
(Gotta throw in a plug for the place -- Reilly's Treasured Gold -- the guys there, Kevin (owner), Kirby (visitor) and especially Joe (who spent a long time talking to me and giving me a little training) were super!
So - even though it was thunder, lightning and raining - I couldn't resist testing her out tonight. In the dark, and during a break in the showers, I hit the volleyball pit at my apartment complex for an hour and a half. After 30 minutes or so of messing with the settings, and even detecting my own scoop a few times due to lazy carriage, I was about to bag it, and then... bingo! A penny!
Nothing old, but at least some paydirt on the first night. Over the next hour (and the next dozen mosquito bites) I got a dime and a cheapo silver ring, as well as two plastic dinosaurs that were lying on top. Photo's attached, and I'm hooked. (apparently I need a better digital camera too).
The one thing that was weird was that I had 5 or 6 strong signals that I couldn't get down to because of some landscaping fabric that's about six inches under the sand -- I didn't want to mess with it.
I'm off to the beach in the morning. Thanks again for the advice on the right starter machine, and for discouraging any tresspassing -- I'll keep that in mind too.

Great start and welcome aboard. You hit the nail on the head with Kevin at Reilly's, he's a great guy. I ordered my sand scoop from there a while back and had nothing but great service. Do a search for 'Ace 250" here on the boards and you will find a wealth of info that will make those first times out a bit easier. One hint that most of us '250 users seem to agree on is to run in Jewlery mode with the sensitivity around four bars. Once you get the hang of digging some stuff, you can notch out the first couple of bars on the left to help get rid of some of theose odd chunks of small aluminum and whatnot. At the beach, choose wet or dry; don't try to sweep between the two or it'll drive your machine (and you!) nuts with false hits. The wetter it gets (even a few inches down) the lower the sensitivity you will need to run.

Have fun and HH!

Digger, Welcome to the forum. I believe you got an excellent machine from all the feedback in this forum. We have a lot of members here with the Ace 250!

You're right about Kevin Reilly. I've bought a few things from him at his store! Nice guy.

When you go to the beach, try hunting right off of Atlantic Avenue, as they just had the Seafood Festival about a month ago. I went there for about a half hour the day after and found a lot of clad and a silver earring!

Welcome to the forum! Also congrats on those first finds. You definitely have the bug now. Oh...when they put down that landscaping fabric they use these BIG metal staples to hold it in place until the sand or mulch go down. Maybe that's the signal you're getting. Good luck and post those pics!
