Hey all,

I am looking for some advice and this forum seemed like the best place to find it. I want to pick up the hobby of metal detecting but i am not sure what kind of detector to buy.
--I'm willing to spend up to $1000 (giver or take).
--The area I'm in is full of old iron mines.
--My main target would be coins.

Not that i would be detecting directly over the mines but there's iron ore all over the place around here. What detectors should i consider purchasing considering my newbie status, the area I'll be covering and my target? I appreciate any suggestions you guys might have.

Thanks, Mike.

I hate to say it but you'll be diggin a lot of ore. All VLF detectors love iron like a man dying of thrust in the desert loves water.

The Tesoro brand is pretty good at ignoring smaller iron like that of your average square nail, but the big chunks, well, I don't know of anything that ignores them other than to turn the discrimination up so high you miss coins.

Maybe someone else here can be of more help.

As for me I'd rely upon the sounds and I'd employ the Tesoro Tejon's dual discrimination to isolate the more probable targets.

It will be a tough situation for no matter what you get. With the possibility of more control comes the possibility of more success. You have a high price range so you still should be able to find something that works for you. I would not reccomend a Fisher other than the F75 since it can show you mineral content right on the screen. The other models are iron hounds in some cases. Look to Minelab such as the X70 which is a good detector and has a good deal going right now. If you need more help with your purchase please let me know.

I'm a newbie too, I just purchased a Minelab Explorer SE, and in fact UPS hasn't delivered it yet. I live smack dab in one of the largest hematite deposits in NY state. I never thought about this until after I saw your posting - fortunately if I travel 5-10 miles down the road I'm out of the iron pocket.

Check out the Minelab Soverign GT. It is known for its splendid iron mask ability. I just purchased a Fisher F-75 and it was a near toss-up between the two; and that was nothing to do with the deciding factor. I don't have iron mines, but generations of farmers hereabouts have planted enough to give me fits.

the iron never caused a problem with my whites QXT that i had, as a matter of fact i found a crescent wrench last year along the RR tracks buried 9-10in in iron ore pellets, as long as i GB over them, i thought it would cause interference, i also hunted old Cave in grounds around Negaunee, Mi. where they pulled all the old houses off years ago, now they are opening this land back up to the public. i was surprised at the lack of targets in the area, and thought maybe the ore was messing with me. now i think it has been hunted to death over the last 45 years. you'll just have to read about the different machines, many great units out there, good luck
