I have looked around and a decent detector water proof detector looks to be the Garret AT pro but I dont think it is for diving.

Like everybody else I am primarily interested in Precious metals and old coins which I think will happen underwater where I live. IE I live in a South Florida Hot spot and definitely want an underwater detector for shallow dives, but also have land in Georgia so am also interested in dry land detecting in that area and others.

That said, I dont know which would be the best for both.

Thanks for your patience.

welcome !!
at pro good to 10ft.only...if that works for you its a good all around detector.I love mine.I'm not familiar personally with deeper diving machines.

Thanks - I am thinking I might want to dive deeper than 10' occasionally but being new, not sure right now, but I definitely want one good enough that I will be able to exclude junk metals to some degree.

You may want to get your feet wet first with a mid priced machine like atp...many deeper machines are pricey and many are PI machines which do not discriminate well.you may end up with two machines.

I'd suggest the Minelab Excalibur II, it's waterproof to 200 feet and come with a dive shaft. It will allow you to discriminate small nails and bobby pins. You can discriminate more, but you will lose some of the smaller gold. In addition, you should consider a different machine for land hunting. The Excalibur will work on land, but is better designed for water or beach hunting.

Okay next question is If I go with something like an AT pro for now, IE for dry land, beach and wading, I would prefer to have a machine that folds up. What are the options there for something of AT pro quality and water proof to 10 or so feet without breaking the bank ?

Thanks Again

Thanks guys.

I decided to cheap out and try a Fisher F2 for now.
Guess I can upgrade the coil if I want to , but decided if I get serious I will upgrade later.

Depends on your budget and goals.
Diving? Get a second-hand water detector off of EBay. There are several non-pulse models that have discrimination adjustments. If you like it, and/or get lucky, you can go on to a higher end or pulse model.
On land?
I really like the ones with water resistance capabilities, such as the Garrett AT Series, the ATX, the Minelab CTX 3030 and Whites Coinmaster. Some are over $2000, but the Coinmaster GT has water resistance and auto tune at $359.
I have detected for decades, and I think water resistance is, and always has been, a top feature to have. Coins develop a halo effect when it rains. Storms hit when you are in the field. Beaches have waves. Never saw it mentioned, but detecting in the rain has advantages, whether on land or at the beach. No crowds, halo effect, easy to dig and other things that make it desirable, if your detector is able.
My wish is for the CTX. Extreme adjustability of the shaft, no yards of coil wire making it look home-made, waterproof to 10 feet, GPS and wireless headphones. Heck, how many times have you gotten entangled with regular headphones?
Would someone please give me $2500?

Um, I am looking too. Saw a detector site where the Fisher F4 was rated the Gold Award Winner among low price detectors. It showed list as $399 but I have seen them on Ebay under $300.

Cz-21 for diving. It is built like a tank and weighs about the same! You can hipmount the control and use it on land. The Excal is probably the most popular for beach detecting but I've used it and the CZ diving. The Cz has a faster recovery and better stock shaft setup for diving.

I love these threads where everyone wants to tell you what they think would be a good detector. I think I'll join in. Its fun!

First of all, the ATP is a poor choice for anything saltwater-related. It has a lot of falsing in wet sand and of course, in water. Of course, your mileage may vary.

Secondly, If you want a detector that is close to what you paid for the ATP and give you all of what you want, then for me it'd be the Tesoro Sand Shark hands down. Water-tight to 200 feet. Excellent in salt environment. Made for it, really. Good unit. This is a good unit for a good price.

If you need/ want discrimination You will either need a rugged multifrequency VLF detector designed for diving, such as a Mine lab Excalibur, Fisher CZ21, or a Whites BHID not an all terrain detector with a 10 ft depth restriction for detecting in salt water.

If you are willing to dig all, and do not need discrimination a PI detector would be a good choice as it will detect deeper and cost less.
Popular Detectors for shallow water hunting / diving are: Tesoro Sand Shark (if bought new comes with non transferrable life time warranty), Whites SurfPI Dual Field, Garrett Sea Hunter Mark ll.

If you cannot afford to buy new, insist that it comes with the original shipping invoice purchased from a reputable licensed dealer , which you will need for warranty and peace of mind that it is not stolen or a counterfit from china. If possible, be sure that you get the original shipping containers with protective foam so that you can easily return it for repair.

Be sure to talk to the original purchaser to determine reason why he or she is selling it and he or she is honest (judgement call).
I will only purchase of Ebay, if I am able to check out the detector on the beach with the seller to make sure that it works properly.

I have used both T Net Member and Dealer Classifieds and have not had any problems.
Avoid purchasing from anyone, who does not live in the same country as where you live.

Whatever, you do buy quality as it actually cost less since it has good resale value.
Do not buy a piece of junk, because it looks cheap, as it will definitely cost you more.

I have decided to buy two MD's and Instead of buying a Fisher F2 then add a DD coil later, I just decided to go ahead and spend the $ for a Fisher F5 for the additional functions.

I will buy an underwater detector later.

Thanks
