Could Be A Musket Ball, Or Someone Long Ago Could Have Been Trying To Make A Cast Net Weight. trk5capt...

Re: Newbie's First Relic!

Looks like a musket ball to me. Great job. What part of the cape are you on?

Re: Newbie's First Relic!

Re: Newbie's First Relic!

Thanks everyone for the feedback,

This was found in West Hyannisport, Mass. The indent at the top does not go through the piece. In other words you can't put a line through it and use it as a weight...it's solid. But since I found it only 2-3 inches down in my dirt driveway, I am skeptical about it as an actual musket ball/

2nd Cup, Could Be They Never Finished Drilling It Out, Here In The South I Have Found Many Musket Balls & Minis In CW Camps That Were Drilled Out By The Soldiers To Use On Cast Nets To Fish & Shrimp In The Salt Water. trk5capt...

Re: Newbie's First Relic!

Don't matter how deep they are. I find oldies at 2 inches or 10 inches, depends on the dirt. It is a fired musket ball, but hard to tell age. They still fire black powder balls as a hobby. The only way I can usually tell is to put it in context with other things found, or the patina the lead gets (they get a dark 'dirty' brown or white patina as they age but that don't always happen depending on soil coniditons. All mine I have found had a patina).

Re: Newbie's First Relic!

i live in mass and i find them in most towns i go to,, got 40-50 musketballs all sizes,, the first one is a rush though,, many more to come..
