I suspect there might have been a house here before mine was built in 1922. I found a 1883 Indian head cent at 8" deep and it was loud and clear. It's in rough shape and was green as a gourd when I dug it up. It was much worse than anything else I have dug here so far. I found the old bone handle knife at about 4 or 5" deep next to an old tree. The unidentified thingy has S C & O on it I think anyway. If you have any ideas on what it is I sure would like to hear them. And who do ya think made the knife? Thanks a bunch and HH.

Nice finds. That’s a nice Old Lakeside Cutlery jackknife. The other thing looks like a tip used to design cakes.

The "S C & O" monogram should be read as "S & Co." It's the drop (keyhole cover) from a padlock made by Sargent & Co. of New Haven, CT, a major lock manufacturer since 1854. I believe it's the lock from a wrought iron type commonly referred to as "smokehouse locks" or "smokies," and probably around 100-150 years old. Here are a couple of Sargent & Co. locks showing the same "S & Co" monogram/logo:

That is pretty cool Ant... I did not know that more than one company use the sheild logo on the knives. I thought only Schrade used it.

Great finds DL. I'm still waiting for my first IH (one of my favorites). Even with the crud, your coin looks just great to me.

I think that the most incredible thing about this thread, however, is that PBK somehow made the connection between your whatsit and the keyhole cover to an old padlock. Damn. PBK, I think we've all benefited from your help in the past. You're the best possible encylopedia.

PS: Are you finally willing to admit that you're at least partly machine?
