I found this while surfing around looking for battery information.

It explains that Nimh batteries are in fact memory free, and that Nicad memory is due to the Cadmium in them and how it crystalizes.
It also has details for re-conditioning Nicads.
There are alot of other pages on that site that go into detail on other battery types, and how to get the most out of them. The language is a big difficult at times tho, seeming to be more scientific than simple.
