Afternoon,

Been a long dry spell, but the drought is broken here and rain is on the way. Plan on doing some heavy duty digging in the next few days. Ran across this over the weekend.

It is one of the nicer "bird points" I have found in a while. Amazing how the tip nor barbs were damaged. I think this would be considered a short Sabinal...closest I could find at any rate...bird points are kinda vague...many have the traits of several different types in one.

Happy Hunting,

Atlantis

That's a beauty! It almost even looks like a bird.

That's a beauty!!! I live in Utah now but I grew up in Louisiana (Calcasieu Parish). That's where I learned to hunt points.

Atlantis,

That is a show piece for sure!! That one would be in my best finds case easily. Great job!!

Happy Huntin' , Bent-Twig.

Now that's what I'm talkin' about!!!

That is an exceptional Birdpoint. Definitely one of the finest I've seen.

Congrats Atlantis and thanks for the picture.

Very nice!! There was an article in a magazine entitled "Primitive Archer" a month or two ago discussing them. A guy that lives here in my hometown said that b.p.s were left over from larger points, but this article disproves his ideas. Seems that blood proteins found in old finds were from small game, such as rabbits, etc, but also from deer, elk, bison and moose. A sister article had a fellow shooting bird points into a freshly killed deer, lungs and heart left intact. The points showed very good penetration, some even passed thru. Hope I'm not boring you, this may be old news to many.

Afternoon,

Never boring....always something new to learn. In general the "bird points" were true arrowheads. Most of the larger points you find are dart or atlatl points. They were thrown not shot. Just makes sense...would have took a heck of a bow to shoot some of the weighty dart points we find here.

Nice point Atlantis. Looks to be very well made.

I have hunted with flint points, skinned with flint, and still have friends who deer hunt solely with aboriginal equipment.

All arrow tips legal to hunt deer here in Oklahoma must be at least 1 1/2" long with at least a 7/8". The typical metal arrow tips weighs around 125 grain. For comparison, we weighed well made typical "legal flint" arrowheads that are used to take deer with and they weigh around 100-250 grain. The variances in the flint projectiles varies depending on the styles, as is preferred by the different abo archers. Here's the kicker - we weighed numerous Scallorn, Washita, Sequoyah and other authentic aboriginal flint arrow tips and almost all of them weighed around 10 grains (the vast majority were under 10 grain at 8-9 grain).

Thought you'd find that interesting!

Matt

Placement is important!

Morning,

Good eatin'......pass me the sweet taters!

Nice find! Its always a pleasure for me to find arrowpoints. Here in Bowie County, it seems like I find about 95% Darts.
I'd come closer to calling that one you found a Cuney point, and a nice one at that.

Atlantis, Great point, love it.

Well I was enjoying this post until I saw the dead racoon, I'm sorry but I find these pics offensive, I'm not on Indian Artifacts Forum to view such things. This is one of the reasons I left the last forum. I'll not report it to Jeff because he might pull the post, that wouldn't be fair on Atlantis. All I ask is please don't post dead animals. :'(

Molly.

Sorry if I offended you Molly. I was merely showing a modern day arrowhead and the damage one shot can do if placed properly since you said if might take several shots to kill a deer with a "birdpoint". If you care to report it -- have at it.
