Well after being gone for a month I'm back. The wife and I had a fantastic time back home in the ole U.P. I have to admit I spent much more time enjoying the fall colors and deer hunting this year than I had in the past 4 years. We had been busy working on our home. Made a bit of wood for my parents and hauled it so Mding took a back seat.
Anyway I had told a few of the guys here I would take some picks of the piece of copper I found in a leather bag while digging a trench for my gramps when about 13 years old. It's a nice half breed that fills the palm of my hand. 4"x4" and about an 1' and a half thick. Look close and you can see where it had been chiseled off a much larger piece. I can only imagine who had carried that bag, an explorer maybe? My parents home now it is only about 3 or 4 hundred yds from Lake Superior. Imagine that they lost on their trek coming So. I know there is an old Military Trail just to the west a few miles. Was an Indian trail prior to that.
The assistant states attorney for Knox Co. here in IL some years ago offered me 2k for it. The other piece was one from this trip. About half the size again of both my hands together. I had gone to an old homestead but the folks were not home. So my buddy and I decided to go fishing.
