Well after being gone for a month I'm back. The wife and I had a fantastic time back home in the ole U.P. I have to admit I spent much more time enjoying the fall colors and deer hunting this year than I had in the past 4 years. We had been busy working on our home. Made a bit of wood for my parents and hauled it so Mding took a back seat.
Anyway I had told a few of the guys here I would take some picks of the piece of copper I found in a leather bag while digging a trench for my gramps when about 13 years old. It's a nice half breed that fills the palm of my hand. 4"x4" and about an 1' and a half thick. Look close and you can see where it had been chiseled off a much larger piece. I can only imagine who had carried that bag, an explorer maybe? My parents home now it is only about 3 or 4 hundred yds from Lake Superior. Imagine that they lost on their trek coming So. I know there is an old Military Trail just to the west a few miles. Was an Indian trail prior to that.
The assistant states attorney for Knox Co. here in IL some years ago offered me 2k for it. The other piece was one from this trip. About half the size again of both my hands together. I had gone to an old homestead but the folks were not home. So my buddy and I decided to go fishing.

a couple of nice pieces, i would imagine the old indian trail to Ft. Wilkins would be quite intresting to check out, sounds like a nice break from the usual

Nice score!!!
Are any of those military or indian trails close to Marquette?
Also, did you find the recent piece with your M6? I am curious because I hunt about 20 min. N of Marquette and I would love to find some copper.

Makton

there is a little copper around marquette but i havent found any yet, one of my dads buddy says that he has found some around his property, near the gold mine's area that ive been playing in, i have to get up to his place next summer, he has the old Nash auto maker's lodge on his property as well, nothing left from what i hear.

Yes, with the M6. I didn't get the chance to get to a mine that is close by. It's right at the 38/26 junction. Pretty good climb to the top. Shaft is open but I'm a chicken to ever venture that. Just poin tme to the poor rock piles.

i have know intention of entering any shafts either, just the tailings and the mining camps, actualy all the mines i have found are full of water or filled in so far

Do you know the one I'm talking about? A friend of mine and his brother-in law went there and walked inside for a ways. I told him he was d@%^ed fool. Had pics of the old tracks and such. You could see wher there had been collapses here and there. There are a few foundations and stacks though. In May I'm going for sure as all the grass and brush will be down. Think about making the trip up. The wife and I go the last 2 weeks of May. I,m also back home in July and of course for Oct. bow hunting.

well we should be able to hook up some time next spring, still havent gotten up to the Baraga area where my buddy is, we just got a better second veicheal which will make it easyer to get away, also trying to save my vacation time for the summer to hunt
