Found what looks to be a gold cuff button from world war one and the great seal. Has a back mark of Waterbury Connecticut any thoughts?

Did they have gold buttons then? or is this most likely plated?

From my experience, all the gold plated objects I’ve found from the early 1900s and 1800s always look like crap. The solid gold always keeps its look. That’s just my experience though

Easy recovery, and a fine one at that.
Just has a gold wash, not solid.
Certainly a beautiful save, congrats.

Once in awhile one comes up retaining all the gold still.
Not often enough though. So I kind put a recovery as yours in the rare find category. (Not the type of button, but the retained gold wash)
I have only found one that looked great.

Yeah this was found in a freshly bulldozed lot. I am guessing it was protected by being stuck under some floorboards of the structure that was raised.

Here's the backmark. Waterbury Button Co.

GREAT FIND :) THANKS FOR SHARING

Very nice Save of the Eagle button. This button is a real Beaut', and in great shape. This was indeed one great surface find. Congrat's

Anyways, It's right down the street (Washington Ave) from Camp Logan Houston. Camp Logan was a camp that black recruits from the Chicago area came to train for the war effort. Anyways there was a big riot and many people died and or was hanged. Pretty sad affair. There is a movie about it called the "24th" and worth watching.
But the button was maybe a mile from that camp. Here's the summery: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camp_Logan
