Probably not the right place to post it but this is where I feel most at home.

More of a "what is it" for my friends down here in the basement. :notworthy:

Hoping Harry will chime in.... wondering if it was used for grinding cornmeal or something. Weird part is the crystalline vein running through the center of it... not many naturally occurring rocks down here in the lowcountry and seems like "they" would have used something else, or at least something solid, for pounding/grinding... :icon_scratch:

Here are some pics and I'll include some glass to make it legit... 8-)

True oddity for sure but i do not think it is a artifact. Very symmetrical and misleading but really no evidence of pecking into form, no usage other then the divit in the top. That could have happened several ways. The divit area has no signs of pecking and should be pronounced and clean not looking like a area dissolved or was hit by something. However it appears I just see no usage....What i do see is a artillery shell. During the Revolutionary war didn't they use stone mortar shells????......Either way i am not sure other then what i see on it............GTP

Very cool I would post it in the Native American section. But it does look like some kind of grinding stone or mortor. But this is coming from some one that thinks they find artifacts but they just turn out to be nothing more then rocks.

Think it may be a hammerstone

Used for grinding corn, etc.

Ya, neat part of this hobby is finding stuff that makes you think wtf :icon_scratch:... I also found some grape shot (naval canister and what I think is one part of a bar shot) in the same spot.... it was definitely brought here by somebody from somewhere other than here, or somebody from here, went somewhere else and brought it back here (how's that for an accurate identification :laughing7:)...

GTP, the "divet" area is a crystalline vein that runs all the way through the center from one side to other. Maybe they were thinking about using it as a projectile and would be able to easily remove the softer crytals and add powder????

What ever it is, it will garner a spot on one of my shelves!

I think it could possibly be part of a pestle used for grinding. Here is part of one I found that was at a large native american camp site. It looks similar although I think yours might have been reused after it broke maybe as a hammer stone. Then again maybe it was a hammer stone in the first place. Hard to tell.

I've been holding mine for a while the past few days (insert joke here) and kind of feel the wear of another hand... I'll try to get pictures later, where the stone dips in fitting my fingers almost perfectly when holding it with the smaller, more pointed end down.

Pics of the canister shot too.
