Some time ago, I think in the 80's someone came up with an aluminum non- chair system that strapped on the back of your knees and legs that allowed you to squat without bending your knees all the way, nor sit down. It was for people who either had bad knees or back problems and could not kneel. It went behind the legs , not on the outside. And did not interfere with walking or standing still.

I'm glad to see this thread as my 66 year old knees could use some help from time to time. You may want to look at a certain on-line vendor (don't know if I'm allowed to provide a direct link) for Knee Savers for baseball catchers.
