Metal Detecting
Well, I went detecting at an old school in the area that was originally built in 1848 and struck nothing but can slaw and some 3 pennies. I had a feeling that it had been hunted before but thought I would try my luck. However, I did run into someone else who had the same idea I did. Real nice guy too. He let me borrow his spare pin pointer to use for the day which saved my lots of time from digging.

Anyway, I am going out in the AM to try my luck at the oceanfront. Hopefully there will be some better finds due to hurricane Matthew coming through and moving the sand around. There is Blackbeard's treasure out there and I am going to find it!

Happy that you met a fellow detectorist. And one nice enough to loan equipment. Good Luck on that beach and blackbeards treasure.

I hunted my 1st 6 months without a pin pointer. Now that I have got used to using one, I will not hunt without. If both PP's break for some reason I can always remount my probe. You are in a great historical area. My suggestion is follow your gut, when it comes to the day's site selection. I take it that you are a coin shooter like myself. I find way more keepers on private properties than the public spaces.

Yeah more of a coin hunter and jewelry. however, when I will start hunting more uninterrupted areas (farm land and wooded areas my family owns) I will then start looking for more relics and historical artifacts. Believe it or not my father went detecting on some farmland about 10 years ago and found a civil war button. He actually showed it to me today and it was in great shape. Told him to get it appraised and either sell it or donate it to one of the local museums.

Hope Mattew helps you out today at the beach, if not, at least it is hockey season and your Blues are starting out well! Oh yeah, buy a pin pointer. Crazy dirt hunting without one!

I have been using a Garrett ATP as my pinpointer to this point, but it has been working pretty well for me, just doesn't have the reach of the hobby probes... I have an extra one I would trade for some 90% silver...

This year is the first year in almost 15 years thst I've had a pin pointer. My original one I had back in the day broke and the company that made them no longer works on them so I opted for the garrett carrot

How do you like the carrot? See, I mainly go beach detecting so a pin pointer is almost never needed. However, I am wanting to do more inland hunting so it is time to invest.

I wouldn't subject myself to going without it now. That's the second thing on my check lis before I leave the house. It's a super deep little machine plus the little night lite works great. Thing I like about it is that if you wear headphones or its extremely windy you can still feel where the target is

I know how it sucks to dig the can slaw, but it may be hiding the good stuff that is deeper.

It's a pretty good bet that an old schoolyard will already have been hunted by others. That said, I've found silver coins in places that I know have been pounded by other MDers - you just need to be patient and careful, and chances are you'll find something that the others guys missed.

Even better yet, you met a fellow MDer, and a generous one at that. Having friends in the hobby makes it even more enjoyable.

Pounded out sites rarely give up silver quarters, but silver dimes are another thing. Tougher to detect them, especially if they're deep and there's a lot of trash around. I go slow and discriminate out everything to the left of the dime signal. I still find a few older pennies, but overall it's a great way to nail those silver dimes lurking 5 or 6 inches down.

All the one-rooms in my area have been hit hard over the years. One in particular, the farmer gives anyone who asks permission to hunt. A father and son team spent six days in a row digging every signal. I hunted it for the first time back around 1978. Hard pressed to find anything there today.

But still you tried. A moment of silence... :)
