Hey everybody. I have been interested in getting a metal detector for a while. It seems like a pretty cool hobby that intrigues me. I am sure this question has been asked a thousand times before but what is a good metal detector to start out with? I have tried looking online and seen things that say avoid Walmart and Dicks sporting goods. I have seen some deals online that come with a package with a metal detector, bag, shovel, and other accessories but I have no idea if it is good or not. Also, some say they are meant for gold; are some better at detecting gold than others? I may be interested in going through some shallow streams, too.

I live in the Northern Kentucky area, very close to Cincinnati. If anyone lives around here and could show me some things then that would be awesome.

Thanks for your help!

I'll save you a lot if hassle! The best all around value wrapped in one machine that is waterproof to 10' is the AT Pro! Most packages have a bunch if junk in them. But if you do go that route you definitely want Garrett Propointer, Lesche or Garrett digger, and a finds pouch. I use a mesh pouch in water and land to allow sand to drop out of bottom. Good luck and welcome aboard!

Welcome! I live in Shelby county. I haven't been out and about yet because I just got my detector(brother gave me his) and then immediately had my knees replaced.I'm eager to get out there as soon as I heal. Happy hunting!
