There is no date on your story so I assume it is the
time frame of the Ca. gold rush, 1850's ?
If so, and if the gold was buried close enough to
the river to have flooded back then, better bring
your diving gear, Lake Sakakawea is 60+ feet deep
in that area. When Garrison Dam was finished in
1953, and the reservoir began to fill, like with any
huge dam, untold amounts of historic relics, artifacts,
and culture were buried underwater, forever in terms
of our short lives. But hey, I have plenty of electricity
to run the computer!

this is an older post but lake sakajawea is 15 miles north of this location and behind (upstream from) garrison dam
the stanton area is on the exact area where the knife river flows into the missouri river
the stanton area has an average depth of 10-15 feet give or take and in the spring the water is gin clear and the bottom can be seen from 15 foot depths
i hve fished ther for the last 30 years

There seems to be two similar reports with different totals buried. Under Terrys listings, I will check into what Penfield had. Compiling a listing prior to researching them.
