Today me and my friend oldmxrat visited a old ghost town among the pinenuts. It was a difficult hunt, but we managed to rescue some pieces.

I found a thimble and two pieces of jewelry

Most of the time it seems just the wheels are recovered.

I agree with your ID. There are many scrimshaw examples of that - sailors carved them out of whale ivory. Perhaps they reminded them of home.
