You're sure of that? Can you find me a photo of another similar plumb bob? Every plumb bob that I've ever seen looks more like a child's top.

If we're a tool that went into a lathe tail stock.
The slot is where a person can put a square bar in and tap it back out.
It gets held in from the pressure.
