I made this scoop up from scrap in the truck after work one day when I found myself at a sandy tot lot without a sand scoop.

It does not work as well as my other home made scoop.

The wood bar down across the front opening, (which I thought might help for strength), is more of a hindrance than anything.

Value of the open back is up in the air... don't really need it if you can get your hand in the open front of a scoop, which on this one, I can't!
The 1/4" hardware cloth is fine for dry sand, of less value in wet sand when you need to actually dig a bit.
We're still working on a stout beach scoop...
I probably would have been better off just buying a nice one like Sandman advises for the surf if I spent more time at the beach.
