Weather here after Hermine skirted us has been UNBELIEVABLY great! I had the opportunity today to take a little road trip to scout some sites. I found some spots with excellent potential and they're Rev War era areas. Didn't do any detecting, just scouting.

As a brief back story, I gave up a 15 1/2 year military career for him due to some health issues. Uncle Sam basically had me choose my career or my son's health. See ya later Uncle S!! When he became a teen it was a pretty rocky father/son relationship. We eventually have patched things up and he moved out several years back and got married. Unfortunately he and his wife had some problems, decided to separate and he moved back in with us earlier this year.

So why am I posting in the Finds forum? Well my son got home from work after I had returned. Since I got my equipment he's never been around when I go detecting. What the heck I thought, I'll just take him out in the front yard to do some detecting! I fired up my detector and off we went. I showed him how to operate the detector and dug the first plug. Then he got a quick lesson in using the pin pointer. Next hole he dug it. After that he ran the show and took over the detector while I dug. The skeeters started trying to carry us away so we called it quits but not before he did one more sweep. When he got a hit he handled the whole show.

All we found was junk; a piece of copper cable, a rusty spike, a pull tab, some pieces of aluminum can, some unidentifiable iron pieces, a few pieces of old Coke bottle and a piece of a pot or plate. Again, basically JUNK! Ahhh, but the value of it all is priceless.....time spent detecting with my son! When I asked him what he thought of it he said it was pretty cool finding stuff. As his work schedule permits I may have a new detecting partner. Now I'll have to buy another machine!

YES !! I love posts such as this...sorry, I'm the touchy, feely, mushy type...plus..my oldest, at 22, has driven down a few wrong paths, if you get my drift. Won't go into details, but my hunting buddy left his CTX 3030 at my house, said I could use it anytime. As much as I would LOVE to drive that unit around some dirt, I had just gotten used to my ATP and didn't want to try to learn another machine. As I was heading out to hunt one day, he asked me where I was going.. I say detecting, and it hit me..I asked him if he wanted to go...after all, he was semi-interested in some of my cool finds..we grabbed the CTX and off we went. While we struggled to try to learn the CTX operation, we definitely had a great time! No earth-shattering discoveries, but we DID find some middle ground! I am in the market for another ATP now, as a back-up for me and as a machine for my son. Palmetto, great post, thanks very much..ddf

Welcome to Tnet. Always great to have another South Carolinian on board. You are definitely in the right area to find Rev and civil war. Good luck!

That's great plus you are in a great state to hunt Good luck!!!!!!

Very nice story and introduction. Congrats on bonding with your son.

Keep on hunting its just a matter of time, goodies will surface and then you will be amazed !! I've even had some sites that have required extensive time cleaning out the junk but later some good finds surfaced !

I'd rather dig junk then do no digging any day. Plus, you are clearing the ground, might be some more stuff farther down that shines through once the top is cleared off. And you got a family member involved, always good to hear. Good luck with the next dig and you never know, that banner find could be right in the ground around you :D

Thanks very much guys. I have a site that I had searched a few times nearby. The first trip yielded a single Enfield round (fired). My last trip there was nothing but old railroad spikes and a door off of an old signal box. It was an old railroad roadbed though from the 1800's until the early 20's or 30's. I plan to go back to the area and hope to work it out so my son can go with me. I think he'd really love the thrill of a good find! We don't get too many chances to do stuff together due to his work schedule. Hopefully a good hunt together will be able to happen!

Very nice post. Congrats on the hunt and a little quality time with your son.

Nothing but junk depending what your talking about. Finds or quality time with the kid. I'd say quality hunt with finds you can't replace.

a bit of junk at first is good ...shows them you gotta earn it..like all things in life ..unless you got a rich daddy that is...

Man you live in the right location to be able to find some great items from 300 years of history. I have a 19 year old that I try to keep an interest in detecting all is good until his phone starts beeping and he continuously is texting. Keep at it I'm sure things will all come together.

Welcome to Tnet... good post.

The time spent together is the real treasure congrats
