I found this strange piece of metal while detecting. I know some of you really enjoy finding the obscure stuff. The big picture is in focus the other is a little out of focus, sorry my macro isn't too good on the camera I was using. That is a 4 on the piece that I was trying to get a shot of.

Any ideas? It is magnetic.

Re: Number 4? new pics

Okay I took a couple more pictures of the item. Although the first picture I posted made it look like a can opener part I don't think it is. There is no sharp part on it that would be the blade. It is stainless steel according to a guy I know who welds. Thanks for looking.

It looks like the bottom plate for a set of points, for a car or truck Most distributors had a pivot hole to set the points in, then you adjusted the points with a "feeler" gauge.

Yep, that's a sewing machine attachment alright. The following pics are of attachments to my old foot pedal Wyeth Sewing machine. This particular attachment is used for rolled hems. The 4 is probably a 1/4 inch hem. Most old machines had 4 or 5 different size attachments for hemming trousers, to skirts to linens.

Thanks a lot I really appreciate it. How old is the sewing machine you have that the attachment in your picture goes to?

My Machine is dated around 1915. Looking at a few web sites, your attachment appears to be from a singer judging from the tip that incerts into the machine. Although old sewing machines generally don't sell for much, an attachment such as this to complete a set may be priceless!

The following pic came from a 1899 singer model 27: http://www.ismacs.net/singer/att27.html
