Nyc knockin on doors

I see now that I may not be able to find many public places on Staten Island to MD. I will have to resort to knocking on doors to get permission but nobody here will give something for nothing. How do I make it worth their while knowing that I probably won't find much of anything anyways? Or how should I pitch it? Thanks for helping.
