OD-1 OFFICIAL & DIPLOMATIC : Carter/Lombard Street

Hey All,

I'm new here, so please forgive me if I have not given enough information...

I found reference online that the button I found is an OD-1 OFFICIAL & DIPLOMATIC : Carter/Lombard Street. It has the loop on the back, and the Carter Lombard Street is easily readable. The sides of the front are worn, and i am not sure if it has crud or patina around the edges covering more letters, but you can see States Of along the top. It is around 1/2" in diameter.



Also I did not know if/how i should clean it. There are spots on the back where the patina is not evident, and the base metal is shining through.

Also, does the fact that I pulled it out of the ground impact value? I am assuming it does...

The Diplomatic button you saw online @ "The Picket Post" which is a civil war shop in my local area that I stop by in every once in a-while. I actually saw this button in their show case, it was the first time i ever seen this variety of button. Being a button collector myself... I always remember buttons I have not seen and thought this diplomatic button was pretty kewl button.

To answer your question - yes.. normally if the button is dug then it does impact the value of it - but in cases where the button is so scarce it may not affect the value that much on a dug button that is in "fairly good condition". The version of the one @ The Picket Post is in excellent condition for a "dug button" and they sold it for around $150.. The button of yours can be cleaned up a bit more, I do not know if you know how to clean buttons or not?? but you should be able to make it more clearer with some cleaning.. I would say the value of this button is right close to the one The Picket Post sold...

Honestly, this is the first thing of value I have found outside of an 1883 Indian Head Penny, so I have no idea how to clean this. I found a thread on the forum about button cleaning, http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/cleaning-preservation/89045-how-clean-buttons.html, which was informative so I was going to try what he said after I did some more research. I don't really want to destroy, via incompetence, the first super cool thing I've found. Do you know if the information on that thread is still valid, and would it work for this little guy?
