I bought my first metal detector in December & have been getting my feet wet so to speak since then. I was fortunate to obtain permission (including a gate key) to a 460+ acre tract of undeveloped land in an area with a lot of history. This area was settled in the 1730's.

Here are my finds from my first 4 trips. Most of them were found along an old Colonial road that cuts through the woods. So far I have located two home sites and a potential third one.

Interesting relic finds! Looks like a couple of musket balls too. Good amount of buttons.
Nice spot you found to hunt, gonna be some really nice finds there! Congrats!

Thanks. I took them to an archeaologist at the University of South Carolina; one of the lead balls is an unfired 18th century buckshot. The other was fired from a Conferate revolver.

hey dude I come to that area every year or so for the beach life.
Pick a good 2 acres and save it for my next visit.
I'll bring the beers

Big congrats to you on getting that permission. The road will give you more, I bet! That's a great old hoe, and is that a cowbell next to it?

Great finds! Looks like you have a nice colonial site there. Take your time and listen for those faint signals. I found a 1776 King George III (Gold) half Guinea at a colonial site at 14 inches. HH and Good Luck

Nice finds! I think that the piece in the first pic, lower right, is a harmonica reed. The fancy little flat button is really cool too, and an IHC. Well played. GL&HH.

A nice start on a site that sounds like it has great potential! !

I'd like to get an approximate date range/time period for this flat button. There are no visible marks on the front and no maker's marks on the back. Just the design that can be seen in the second picture. It's about the size of a nickel.

There is no better way to "get your feet wet" than hunting a Colonial site! Cool finds already, love the buttons and the tools. Good luck there and Congrats!

you're gonna pull some really great stuff out of that place, congrats

It looks like you will be busy for a long time. I know you will find some great relics and coins. Keep at it.

Wow! you're off to an amazing start. Some awesome relics and really cool buttons. Give that land proper respect and spend allot of time there.

Your on the right track, the buckle is the earliest find, need a close up but pretty sure its a 1660-1720 type.

Here is a picture of the buckle. Do you have an idea of the approximate age of the button I posted separate pictures of? I found it last weekend at a homesite I just discovered & I'm trying to determine how old the site is.

Yeap, the buckle is the date I quoted, nice early one!

The button is circa 1820-30s.

Nice assortment of finds so far, liking the early buckle.
