OK so I've had this for about 5 yrs.....

Since I've moved into this house I've made several nifty discoveries (old bottles, my first silver dollar, CW era relics), but this I'm not so sure about. I found it in one of my old barns (wedged between several old singer sewing machines and an enormous stack of books/National Geographics, etc).

I've been holding onto it even though I think it's a fake, although it is still pretty old...

It's all stuck together and i can't unroll it. Any ideas on how to unstick it? Steam?

Would you like to send it to me for authentication?
I do have problems losing mail....
Is that ink raised at all or is it a print?
Have you unrolled it and checked the back of it for invisible maps?

In my opinion & I always have one :D I agree with you, it looks fake. The almost perfect & unfaded letters are a give away.

paper that is in the condition you described may be unrolled in the following manner.
take two old wooden yardsticks..or similar materials...
place one piece of wood on either side of the end you can access...clip in place, hang in the bathroom away from the shower area...take a shower, use plenty of hot water and soap.

the steam generated by the shower will allow the paper to fall back into it's original shape...
allow to hang for a day in a dry place.

You could take it to the library and talk to the head libriarian!

Re: OK so I've had this for about 5 yrs.....

i was archivist for a local historical society..we had lots of maps, they would not spend dollars to "stabilize" the materials...so i had to make do...i took some maps into the bathroom, hung them as described...turned on the hot water, the maps on the far side of the room, closed the door, came back in about 7 minutes...

flat, no water damage. that's where you want it...

never do anything to an artifact, that can not be undone.

First ... Find out if it is paper or Velium.

If paper it is a reproduction of an original.

If Velium (actual sheep skin stretched and scraped very thin)
The originals were all made on Velium.
