nice find congrats HH

Yeah they are artifacts I see the secondary flaking on them. But they are knifes and scraping tools. The only way you could actually decide if they are old is if you could study the flaking on them and then maybe decide the age and it wont be for sure on the age. They used these same type of tools for thousands of yrs till Historic. In caves and overhangs people from the beginning of time used them. Could of been many of yrs of people using it.

Thx for your input rock very helpful

I hope it helps you. I am on a field that I have permission to hunt on and have found some early tools. Maybe Early Archaic and all the way to Mississippian period. I have found 1 ms point and 1 Woodland point and also a base to a Dalton point along with hundreds of broken pieces of all kinds of artifacts. Scrapers and all types of tools. But there is no way of telling the age of the tools. The points have been scattered by the plow. I do not know what level of the dirt is for each period of time. This is an example of what I am talking about. The age is from 10k and all the way to 2000 B.P. in age. That is allot of different people in one area.

So what your saying is I might have found some really old tools ?

The honest answer is I dont know. You can always get books for identification of stone artifacts from your area. I like the ones with nice pictures. But to find a book showing just tools and scrapers is difficult. I have been trying to find one and havent been able to do it. Check amazon.com that is where I get mine from. I just ordered 1 last night. I like the used ones cause they are allot less in $.

If you found them near the surface they are probably native american. And the fact they are still there for you to find could mean it is an old undisturbed site. The deeper you go the older they will get. yelnif...

They were 3-6 inches deep if not more

Untouched ground i could tell by how compact soil wAs the soil fairly dry and compact until I got down 6 inches or more I did notice some moist dirt but just fine deeper

And I have a question about them being Native American ..,,. If they were Native American wouldn't they tools be a little " better made " they're pretty crude looking and almost like 6th grade Neanderthal did them rather than a master craftsman Native American ?? .....?

I've seen some artifacts done by native Americans on the we. And their work looks more defined well made than some real old stuff I've seen on web ...

Not all knappers were good at it. That took some yrs of practice to learn the skill of it, JMO
