FWIW: Several US Patents for barb wire designs have been issued over the years.
Apparently, there is much more to the art (science) than we "city-folk" realize!

I read there were around 500 various patents of barbed wire throughout the early years. I guess it was a hot seller back in the land rush days. Who ever left this took the time to wrap it up with some thin wire to prevent it from coming all unraveled. He must have been a good hand to care that much for just a little usable wire leftover.

One thing I know about barbed wire is...

They made TONS of it.
All styles shapes and patterns.
I mean arseloads of it.

Could wrap it around the earth 100's of times I bet.

When I was kid growing up on farm. We had several different kinds of old barbed wire. When we moved to the farm parts of the original house were 100 years old and that was 1963. I haven't gotten to hunt it much but plan to. As there was old homestead there in early 1800' s. There is also old family cemetery that has oldest stone dated 1798 and the newest 1904. The olfd homestef was only about 200 yards from cemetery. I've found axe head horseshoes and some old lamp parts all dating around 1860 to 1880. Lots of old pottery and broken glass pieces.
There is still old barbed wire there too. I will be glad when I can get back there and spend some time my last hunt there was only 30 minutes. I know that good stuff is there as it never really been hunted and no coins been found yet but know they are there once the junk is gone. Thanks for reading happy hunting.
