✅ SOLVED Old brass item furniture? gun related?

Found next to an old 1850's road, at first I thought gun part or furniture part. It is brass under the patina. Any thoughts welcome, thanks.

Looks like it could be a trigger guard for a rifle or shotgun.

Way too small to be a triggerguard, could be part of a latch of some sort.

It's pretty small, so I'm thinking based on the position of the screw holes that it's part of a cabinet latch.
