Actually, I know where this building is. Anyone who has read "Rocks From Space" O. Richard Norton, will immediately recognize the pic. TimC and I hunted it with no finds. Two female hunters were here last time we hunted. We asked what machines they were using. They got scared off.... must have thought we were FEDS about to arrest. Sorry girls. TimC and I WILL be back till we hit a find. Anyone know the site?? (pic below) TTC

This building is pictured in "Rocks From Space" by Norton. Do YOU know where it is? TTC

A little southwest of Winslow, AZ? I have to assume it is near the crater based on your description.

Yes, on the turn off to Meteor Crater! It was a museum of meteorites.... till Interstate 40 was built, insuring most would pass it by. Incidently, the road it is on is part of the famous "route 66". Now you know the REST of the story. Rocks From Space is must reading for you meteorite buffs. Tnx for allowing my "pic test" to occur. Google Earth shows the ruins just east of the RV park at the turn-off. TTC

Great place. I sat and watched the sunset through the window openings one beautiful Arizona evening.

Thanks Terry!

You broadened my horizons! I've yet to find my first one though.

Hey, Bum Luck! Good to hear from you. I have found HUNDREDS of meteorites over the last few years. Ha ha! That is , if you include MICROMETEORITES!! Google up micrometeorites to find out how EASY it is to find your share.... if you don't mind using a microscope to see them! They are everywhere, Usually gathered under home rain gutters (in the dirt). Take care, my friend. TTC

You guys nailed it, I travel the I 40 at least once a year and have seen that building many times, but have never stopped to shoot a photo.
You have to get off at Meteor Crater or the exit with the neat old round shaped building (just east of the MC exit) that sells all kinds of unique stuff, and travel the south dirt road to get there. I wonder how many times it has been detected?

A little history of the site:

“Built by D.M. Barringer during the hey-day of Route 66, the view from the observation tower was disappointing. I’m sure the Observatory was located this far from the impact crater because it was right on Route 66 and could lure travelers in. “Easy Off - Easy On” even back then. For 25 cents one could view the crater through a telescope, and if the weather was clear - actually see it!”

Terry, you know, I remember as a kid putting out a sheet for a science experiment and after a day or so actually getting some, never mind the bird crap (and the lickin I got from Mom for using her sheet - I thought she liked birds).
