I contacted one of my leading Token Experts & here are his thoughts;
“There are a few options for this sort of token turning up in Bedfordshire (i) market gardeners token used to pay workers when they had picked a box of fruit or veg or (ii) the London markets, used as a receipt for baskets/boxes used for fruit/veg etc or (iii) both market and farm. Many farmers/gardeners also had operations in the big markets in London and the tokens could be used at either end. London market checks are often found in provincial fields as they came out on the trains with the waste from the markets. From the style of the token it will probably date 1860-1910, but at a shilling probably at the later end.”
