Great Finds...I have to share this story.

I started detecting back in 2004. It was probably in our first few years of detecting that a buddy and I were at an Old Fairgrounds on January 1st...New Years Day...as it was like 55 degrees outside...which I assure you in itself is a rarity in Michigan. Usually the ground isn't unthawed until March!

Anyway, a lot of the ground was pretty hard, so I told my buddy...hey...lets head to the old part of the racetrack. The racetrack part was a little muddy, but soft. Usually this part of the grounds is hard as a rock.

About 5 minutes in he says...he look at this weird thing. Neither of us even knew what a makeup compact was.

He opened it up and it was filled with makeup and of course 3 coins.

I know one of them was a first year, 1913 Buffalo Nickel. The other two were both Barber Dimes...1906 and 1908 if memory serves me right. All 3 coins were in beautiful shape as well.

He has found about 1/2 dozen more since then...none with coins in them.

I've found over 20...none with coins in them.

Two of our other detecting comrades...ones been detecting since 1979, the other started in 1986...so they have years of experience between them...and neither has ever found one with coins inside.

Still, every time I dig one out of the ground...I think about the possibility of coins inside...and the fact that my buddies first one had coins in his of course!

Great Digs,

Chuck

Such an awesome find! I open all the compacts I dig but have never been lucky enough to have anything other than dried up makeup or dirt. Big congrats on such a killer find and story behind it!

That really gets our blood pumping! Super nice finds! Congratulations!

Awesome find John

Your on fire man. I've found so many compacts in my career. Every one has been empty lol.

My compact find

When White's first released the DFX, I bought one of the first units. One of my first finds was a sterling silver compact that held a 1909 Barber half dollar. I sent a photo to White's and they used it in some advertising. They also sent me a $200.00 accessory coupon !

I got about a dozen compacts, hadn't opened any for fear of destroying them, they are cool the way they are.... Time to crack them open I think....
