Checked out 5 different spots in the old woods this weekend. Much more hiking and climbing than swinging. 4 out of 5 spots were duds, but that's how it goes. As I got near the one productive site I dug this old transistor radio about 8" down.

Then about 15' further toward the cellar hole I got a strange signal, bounced high-mid, high-high and high-low. Since it had a consistent High and at least one direction high-high I decided to dig. First scoop and out popped roundness that was totally encrusted with brown and light, figured it was an aluminum token. After cleaning turned out to be a 1943 2 Franc coin.

Swung over the hole and a true high tone but deep, dug another scoop and out popped a large round coin.

Turned out to be a 1943 Australian penny.

Filled the hole and swung to check and another high tone 8" away, dug a new hole and saw my favorite sight, silver edge.

Wiped some dirt.

Very cool 1943 S Australian Shilling, 92.5% silver actually made in San Francisco.

Here is the complete handful.

The cuff link has a little design on it.

And this is the mystery item of the weekend.

Has the letters "SUPE..." fancy design and some gilt.

Oh, we saw this on the path to the last site.

Interesting coin spill and bravo on the silver.

Nice hunt, interesting coin finds! :occasion14:

Very sweet hunt! Nice silver fix you got there...

Good day Thad considering the circumstances. That Australian shilling is a neat find.

That shilling is really a nice find. I like the rams head design. You don’t see them often.

Congrats and good luck.

Nice job on the foreign coin spill.

Thx Steve! The ice and mud definitely made it a little treacherous out there today. I was a little surprised that the last dot was such a dud, thought it had some more promise for the effort it took to get there.

Congrats on the cool foreign coins. :occasion14: Probably brought back by a soldier in the Pacific theater.

Nice! I found a 1941 2 franc coin last weekend. That shilling is really neat. Nicely done!

the 41st was deployed to Australia in '42, my dad brought those back...but the french coin would have been traded for (poker game) stateside.

Congrats on a great batch of finds. I like the 1943 coins, as that was the year my dad was born, and today would have been his 75th birthday. Thanks for the post.

Got a little burned out tromping around up and down hill in the woods with nothing much to show for it, my poor legs. BUT, you have just renewed my hope.

Thx! One good hole can make 5 miles of hiking in the mud worth it! At least for us crazy people...

I'd bet my money that those coins were lost by a WW2 returned serviceman that spent time in Australia , likely a Marine who'd spent time on R and R in Aus, you lucky bugger , we call the Pennies Skippy Pennies i have found plenty here , but not so lucky to find the Merino Shilling, still looking :)
