Looks like half of a Lone Star hame hook.

Cool. Age estimate and what were they used for

Hard to tell about the age, but the Lone Star Hook hooked into the ratchet block on the horse hame, and was the hook to which the tugs or traces were attached.

Looks like a broken tip off of a slip hook, from a chain. The site wouldn't let me upload a pic.

I don't think so .. The first photograph clearly shows a hooked end, consistant with a Lone Star hame hook. I could be wrong, but I don't think a chain (slip) hook has that feature.
