You have found the backaction lock assembly off a muzzleloader. This type of rifle or shotgun fired by strikeing oa percussion cap. Most common on shotguns. These could date from the mid 19th century, and were common on English made firearms. Nice find, especially since the lock and hammer are complete.

GMD,is correct.Generally Fowlers/Shotguns had the hammer forward like that
