Its not that big. It just looks it in the pic. It's about the size of a quarter.

I make some of my own sinkers for fishing similar to neils.mine are from one to five ounces and i use them to fish in the arkansas river and below the lakes when they are discharging water.did you find these by a river with strong current?as far as how old they are i could not say but lead brings about a nickel a pound here in eastern oklahoma,i have about eighty pounds if anyone needs some.

found it near a cold water stream here in NY. Lead like this has been outlawed for use as a sinker and I do not believe that anyone has been allowed to fish this stream in years. The site is a late 1600s-early 1900s grist/paper mill. All the good stuff we've found at the site:
seated dime, V nickle, two flying eagles, shield nickel, one indian, several wheats, one musket ball, two or three civil war era buttons (one general service military), and 15-20, 1820s-1840s single piece buttons (this place is a dream for button people), one general service eagle military, and some old broken black glass. I am just very surprised that with the age and commerce on the site in the early 1800s that we havent found any large, two or 3 centers. Its real hard clay and the buttons are almost sitting on top of the ground (some of them with the cotton/wool thread still in them!). They have had 100-150 years to settle and are sitting at about an inch and a half...and no large cents to speak of. Mind boggling. Buttons must pop easier than people drop coins. The seated dime was an interesting find. I think it was 1883. I couldn't image how pissed off that guy must have been to find it missing when he got home. Back then losing 10 cents was like losing a 50 dollar bill.

Neat find, I hunt a reservoir near me and in the summer it usually goes almost dry. I have found many pounds of sinkers in this place. I have some that look like fish. I even found a 3 ringer bullet that was used as a sinker. I've got a big coffee can full of sinkers.

Thanks for posting your story and pictures.

Will do. I think our best finds were the dime and the 1820s-40s general service eagle button. The rest of them were either unidable buttons or really beat up. The dime is in great shape, I would grade it vf, but then again I don't know much about grading, I just guestimate according to what the redbook says are the landmarks to grade.
