Not sure how old this is but its cool. Don't know if little door was cut or if it is like that for a reason

My wild guess its a wooden match holder,was cut out to accept the longer ones?

It's cast iron pretty clean cut does seem like that would be why it was cut

I have a similar one on the wall beside our small wood-stove but the lid is all the way across. 1880 ish, I believe.
