Found this old medal today I think it might be related to the railroad In salt lake? Also found this neat old bakelite toothbrush that managed to survive underground. I find it interesting to compare the types of awards given out to railroad employees back in the day, compared to those offerred by AMTRAK today.
Back in the day awards:
Best division on the system
Best shops on the system
Best signal changing plant
Best roadmaster's districts
Best section on the system
Award for the perfect station
Award for the perfect pumping plant
Best section in the district.

Compare that to AMTRAK's award categories:
Achievement
Excellence in Customer Service
Excellence in Leadership
Innovation/Invention
Operations (like the OP's medal)
Safety
Top Performers overall
Valor

Notice the old time rewards were give to groups of people represented by one; whereas AMTRAK's awards today are given to individuals for their outstanding service and accomplishments.
That medal brings to light (most likely) forgotten history; and its rarity is enough for me to also vote BANNER.
